Layton High student stabbed with pruning shears during fight, hospitalized

LAYTON, Utah — One student is hospitalized in stable condition after a fight near Layton High School on Tuesday afternoon.

Police told KSL that a group of students left the school grounds and ended up across the street at Layton Commons Park to “sort out a disagreement.”

Lt. Lyman with Layton City Police said a fight started between two kids, as well as other kids who were at the park.

During the course of the fight, one of the students reportedly pulled a pair of pruning shears from his backpack and stabbed the other student.

Police said one of the students was stabbed once in the chest area.  The victim was transported to McKay Dee hospital in stable condition.

According to KSL 5 reporter Alex Cabrero, the suspect is 16 years old and the victim is 15 years old. Both are students at Layton High School. The suspect is in custody.

Cabrero also reports that while this fight was going on, and in the aftermath, three schools near Layton Commons Park adopted lockout protocols. By 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Cabrero reported that the schools had reverted to normal protocols and that students were on their way home.
