Are you planning to replace or find new lawn equipment? Now is the time to consider battery-powered options. Battery-operated lawn mowers and other yard maintenance tools are more reliable and efficient. Because they don’t use gasoline, they emit zero emissions while operating. And you don’t need to worry about the risk of fuel spills either. If you’ve never used battery-powered lawn tools, here are Consumer Reports’ recommendations.

Consumer Reports has reviewed hundreds of lawn tools, starting with perhaps the most essential: the lawn mower. At the top of CR’s recommended list is the Ego LM 2135, a battery-operated lawn mower that rates highly for its impressive mulching, easy handling, and clippings dispersion.

CR’s testers also note the Ego LM 2135 filled its bag before chute clogging occurred. In addition, reviewers indicate they could not detect any flaws in its performance. That’s high praise.

CR’s reviewers also gave the Ego LM 2135 an 84 overall score. The $600 lawn mower also scored 5 out of 5 ratings in predicted owner satisfaction, mulching, evenness, noise, and handling. In every other area — run time, charge time, bagging, discharging, and predicted reliability — it scored an impressive 4 out of 5.

Earning a 91 out of 100 is the Kobalt KST 25860-06 leaf trimmer. It scored highly from Consumer Reports for its clean trimming, quick edging, easy and quiet handling, and aggressive cutting capabilities.

As with the Ego LM 2135, reviewers could find no flaws with the Kobalt KST 25860-06’s performance. Reasonably priced between $250 and $280, this leaf trimmer also landed perfect 5/5 ratings in predicted reliability, trimming, edging, tall grass and weed cutting capability, and handling.

This battery-powered lawn tool earned a 4 out of 5 in predicted owner satisfaction and ease of use. But all of its perfect scores were enough to make it a Consumer Reports’ recommended pick.

As for leaf blowers, Consumer Reports highlights the Stihl BGA 57 as a “best buy” for its sweeping, handling, and ease of use. At $130, it’s an affordable option and one that functions quite well.

Reviewers praise the blower’s speed at dispersing leaves and debris, low noise levels, and easy handling. However, they note that it operates at only one speed, which diminishes control, especially in tight areas.

Even with that flaw, this battery-powered lawn tool still earned 5/5 in predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Sweeping, ease of use, and noise at 50 feet were other areas where it earned perfect ratings.

You’ll need a reliable chainsaw to handle and clear fallen branches and logs. Consumer Reports suggests you buy the DeWalt DCCS670X1 for around $370.

It’s a fast chainsaw that’s safe and easy to use, store, and maintain. This battery-powered lawn tool can slice through thick beams quickly and has a great battery run time. It also doesn’t require a tool to tighten its chain.

Though it lacks vibration isolation and received a less-than-perfect 4 out of 5 in predicted reliability, it earned a 5 out of 5 in predicted owner satisfaction, cutting speed, and handling. It’s an excellent choice for those needing to tackle branches and small trees.

Now is a good time to find snowblowers at discounted prices. But in colder weather, clearing your lawn of snow is a breeze with the Snow Joe iON100V-24SB snowblower. Depending on its configuration, this battery-powered lawn tool can range from roughly $1,100 to $3,200. But even the base model excels at snow pile removal, throwing distance, surface cleaning, and handling.

Those are all areas where the Snow Joe iON100V-24SB earned 5 out of 5 ratings. Where it faltered was in its snow removal speed and noise. Still, Consumer Reports’ reviewers note its removal speed was fair (not poor) and praised its multiple speeds, single-lever chute adjustment, and easy-to-use controls.

The Snow Joe iON100V-24SB and the other battery-powered options on this list are excellent alternatives to conventional gas-powered lawn tools. The pricing is comparable, and they outperform gas-operated versions by most standards. Best of all, they don’t emit greenhouse gases. So if you need to replace your old equipment, consider one of these options.
