Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

It seems like everyone has a new cordless pruner, and the novelty of the design has a lot to do with it. Two models have surfaced. The first lets you shred through cuts “mini-chainsaw” style. However, since chains require sharpening and oil, they require more maintenance. The second style simply works like a battery-powered manual pruner. The DeWaltDCPR320 Cordless 20V Max Pruner takes this more traditional approach to garden pruning.

Expected to hit stores next Spring, the DeWalt 20V Max Pruner cuts back unwanted branches and bushes with significantly less effort and hand fatigue. And it does it with that tried-and-true DeWalt ergonomic design we enjoy with their drills and impact drivers.

DeWalt claims that the DCPR320 20V Max Pruner “requires 16X less effort on average than a manual pruner.” If true, then working in the garden just got much simpler.

With a 2.0 Ah compact battery, DeWalt claims you get up to 1,100 cuts per charge. TheDCPR320 lets you work with branches up to 1-1/2 inches thick, too. While it seems like it would be hard to quantify exactly how much easier this tool makes pruning when compared to a manual pruner, squeezing a trigger is exponentially easier than having to repeatedly crank down on pruner handles.

At just 3 lbs (without a battery), the DeWalt Cordless Pruner looks even smaller than the Milwaukee M12 FUEL Hatchet or the Stihl GTA 26 pruner. Of course, the tool noticeably weighs more than your standard garden pruners. In the end, you can decide if the weight-to-effort tradeoff seems worth it.

And, rather than trying to keep a chain sharpened for optimal performance, the DeWalt Cordless Pruner comes with a tool to change out dull blades for sharp ones really easily.

You can expect the DeWalt Cordless 20V Max Pruner to roll out with the rest of the brand’s Spring OPE releases. DeWalt plans to release it either kitted with a 2.0Ah battery or as a bare tool. As a kit (DCPR320D1), it will retail for $149. As a bare tool (DCPR320B), you can pick it up for $99. It will come backed by DeWalt’s 3-year warranty, 1-year free service agreement, and 90-day money-back guarantee.
