Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Having already been impressed with the Greenworks 60V line of cordless OPE, we’re excited to get out hands on their more entry-level model to see how it compares. Now, they take aim at homeowners with smaller lawns who are looking to ditch their outdated gas model with the Greenworks ST60B212 60V 13-inch cordless string trimmer.

Despite its small cutting swath, the Greenworks ST60B212 features its Torqdrive motor. Torqdrive delivers up to 7,400 RPMs (that’s quick). It also produces 30% more power for tackling thicker grass and overgrowth. Greenworks specifically engineered this motor to provide that additional power and torque while allowing for quiet operation and longer motor life.

This string trimmer comes pre-spooled with 0.080-inch spiral twisted line. That’s a little on the lighter side but we typically find that size on residential trimmers. All it means is you may need to stop and bump the head a few more times while you’re working than you would with 0.095″ gauge (or heavier) line.

Speaking of line, this model features Greenworks’ hassle-free Load N Go head. Loading line now only takes a matter of seconds without requiring disassembly. This lets you get back to trimming faster than with a traditional style trimmer head that requires disassembly.

The Greenworks ST60B212 weighs 7.38 pounds as a bare tool and 10.25 pounds with a 60V 2.0Ah battery. Being that this is a residential model using 0.080 line, we hoped it would be a little lighter. Regardless, the weight is nicely distributed since the motor and battery are on opposite ends of the string trimmer.

This cordless string trimmer measures 66.5 inches from tip to tail. Adjusting the front handle lets you dial in the ideal working angle for your height. I’m 6 feet tall and I had no problem finding a comfortable setup with this string trimmer.

Greenworks tells just to expect up to 40 minutes of continuous runtime from a fully charged 2.0Ah battery. On Low, our runtime test came back at 38 minutes and 49 seconds—pretty close to manufacturer specs! Kicking it into High gear, it ran for 29 minutes and 41 seconds—pretty good for a residential trimmer. Considering this represents “trigger time” you should be able to trim up to a 1/2-acre property with this trimmer. It should provide plenty of time to make the rounds and keep your yard looking clean and crisp.

Greenworks keeps the grip and trigger design pretty traditional. This 13-inch string trimmer has a beaver tail safety switch and a two-finger trigger to help reduce hand fatigue.

As I mentioned earlier, the working angle is fully adjustable to fit what’s most comfortable for you.

The cutting swath is also adjustable from 11 inches to 13 inches. This gives you the flexibility needed for trimming in both larger areas and more confined spaces. Typically, a smaller cutting diameter gives you additional runtime and power at the expense of your overall trim area.

This trimmer features a 2-speed gearbox and a variable speed trigger for greater control. The Torqdrive motor spins the head up to 7,000 RPM on Low and 7,400 RPM on High. That’s a bit faster than some of the larger string trimmers, and that extra speed makes up for the lower line mass.

The Greenworks ST60B212 kit retails for $199.99 at your local Tractor supply. The kit includes a single 60V 2.0Ah battery, a 3-amp charger, and a 4-year limited warranty.

Given its performance, weight, runtime, and price, we feel the Greenworks 60V 13-inch cordless string trimmer provides one of the best value string trimmers in the residential class. It has plenty of power for tackling all of your Saturday lawn chores. On top of that, the low weight and great balance make it perfect for anyone looking for a more nimble trimmer. Since the tool runs on the Greenworks 60V platform, you also get access to the rest of their lineup to help keep your yard looking great all season long.
