Robert Lavell Green, 40, was arrested yesterday and charged with grand theft, fraud, dealing in stolen property, and resisting arrest after investigators found evidence that he regularly walks out of Home Depot with items he has not paid for and then takes them straight to a pawn shop. Records at the pawn shop indicate that he has done this over 60 times since August of 2021.

The investigation report states that Green has been “constantly” doing “pushout” thefts at both Gainesville Home Depot locations. He then goes straight to the same pawn shop and sells the stolen merchandise.

Investigators took a list of Green’s pawn shop activity to the Home Depot Loss Prevention Officer, and using the dates, times, and items on the list, the Prevention Officer was reportedly able to match up surveillance video showing Green walking out with the items, usually waving a receipt from a lesser purchase if any employees questioned him.

In one instance, Green was reportedly captured on video walking out of the garden center of the Home Depot at NW 13th Street with a chainsaw and hedge trimmer, flashing a receipt at employees “who are already somewhat distracted,” bypassing both points of purchase, and never offering payment. Two minutes later, he allegedly re-enters the store and does the same thing with another chainsaw. The total value of the stolen items on that day was $897. Thirteen minutes later, pawn shop records show that Green received $400 cash for the three items, attesting that he was their true and rightful owner.

Post Miranda, Green reportedly admitted that he has “constantly” been stealing items from both Gainesville Home Depot stores for months and then pawning them because he needed money. He also reportedly admitting to flashing receipts from earlier, lesser purchases when challenged by employees. Green also reportedly said he has not stolen anything from Lowe’s because Lowe’s tends to always have someone monitoring the doors.

Green reportedly said this was “just something he started doing” because he tried it, found it was easy at Home Depot, and just kept doing it to get money. He reportedly said that he “got out of control with it.”

Green is on probation for possession of cocaine. His bond has been set at $45,000 on the theft/fraud charges; he is being held without bond on the violation of probation.

We all know that the people who shop at pawn shops get great deals, in large part due to the pawn shops’ *other customers,* who are stealing stuff from stores and other citizens, and selling the stuff to the pawn shops for next to nothing. The pawn shops mark the stuff up enough so it’s still a great deal for the buyers, but they make their profit, too. The criminals are happy to get anything for what they stole. The stores, like Home Depot, charge us honest customers more for everything because of all the shoplifting. My friend had to buy his own really nice bike back from the pawn shop when it was stolen from him, and he discovered it for sale at a local pawn shop… Let’s add insult to injury… So, how do we stop this insanity? Maybe going back to stiffer sentences for those convinced of crimes might help? 🤔

What are you talking about, Bob??? I didn’t mention anyone’s race. It doesn’t matter what color someone is. If they are stealing from others, (and that includes from retailers/stores,) they are hurting society. They need to be punished,regardless of their race. Prosecuting crime deters at least some criminal behavior. Bob, your lack of civility toward people you don’t know, your inability to discuss something like this without calling people “RACIST” is an example of what is tearing this country apart, contributing to the increase in crime, and many other negative social ills that are becoming more common.

I was raised to treat everybody the same. I would have checked everybody’s receipts if I worked there. I was making fun of the woke women that work at Home Depot, and it’s a woke company, too. Get woke —> Go broke. Disney is having fun with that this year. Of course they should have checked his receipts regardless of what he looked like. It’s actually illegal for them to stop people for receipts or even if you know they’re stealing. It opens the company and employees up to potential lawsuits and/or negative press and most companies actually have policies in place to terminate employees who actively try to restrict people from leaving.

Walmart will ask to see a receipt for anything that isn’t in a bag since that’s what the law allows. I’m guessing the chainsaws, etc. weren’t in bags. The article even says he would flash old receipts when questioned. The problem was that the employees didn’t actually LOOK at the receipts when he offered them.

It’s not illegal for associates to ask customers for a receipt. It’s part of their job to verify purchase. They can’t apprehend them or anything like that. It’s against company policy for an associate to attempt to physically stop a shoplifter. That’s why they have loss prevention.
